On Thursday me & James took Evie to the library for Tots Tales (James was off making an extra long weekend of it).
One of the people doing it decided that because the Diamond Jubilee was coming up then we should sing Sing a Song a Sixpence and yes we all knew the words ;o)
Then they decided that we should actually sing The National Anthem! LOL the only person who knew the words was the lady who suggested it - none of us parents or the kids knew them allthough we did manage the "lar lar lar lar" bit as well as "god save the queen" ;o)
It reminded me of The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 and 3/4 when the only family who knew the words to the National Anthem were The Singhs ;o)
It shows a distinct lacking in our education system (the kids arent even at school yet so they have an excuse).

Interesting you say that because I was just thinking the other day how the National Anthem isn't taught in schools here like it is in other countries. In fact, it would be incredibly easy to go through life and never have cause to know the words to it at all, never mind actually learn them.
A shame really.
You can be patriotic without knowing the words to the National Anthem.
It may not be taught in schools as it's left to individual choice. Not everyone is a royalist and not everyone is a Christian.
its political correctness gone mad in a way :o(
Here in the US we have the Pledge of Allegiance which is said with one hand over the heart. Now, though, my son knows the Pledge to the Texas Flag! It's so funny to me....as I never learned that (or a pledge to Minnesota's flag) growing up.
